Teatro di Marcello

Built in Julius Caesar’s time, and so pre-dating the Colosseum, this theatre is on the edge of the Jewish Quarter, giving it an alternative name of the Jewish Colosseum.

It seems that much of the structure was buried for centuries and has only recently been excavated. There is still a lot of restoration work going on. The way that old buildings were constantly repurposed over the centuries is clear from the houses incorporated into the top floor of the original building.
